How 50 People From Reddit and YOUTUBE Cleared Their Fungal Acne!
Our skincare brand is live!
After five years of writing research articles on Simple Skincare Science, we have developed our own products based on the content written around this site. To place an order simply go to Malezia.com, or follow us on instagram for updates! We hope you have a great day 🙂
If you saw my first post about how 50 redditors cleared their acne…. well, here we are again! Only this time we’re doing a fungal acne version. 😉
Below you’ll find the skincare routines of 50 different people who’ve managed to kill the beast (malassezia). Feel free to add yours in the comment section as well!
Since these are all case studies it’s only fair I post my own, so next week I’ll be going over my updated skincare routine, and how I’m managing to keep my fungal acne in check with only two products! Yes, you read that right. TWO PRODUCTS.
There will also be a super cool announcement being made in that article that you won’t want to miss. Stay tuned….
Secondly, thank you for all the shout outs! It is truly humbling and I do not take it for granted. Your support is very much appreciated, and isn’t going unnoticed. THANK YOU!!
I’ve tried to include everyone that’s tagged me below, but if I missed you I’m sorry! I swear I’m not ignoring you, I simply put together the first 50 people I came across.
If you would rather NOT be on this list, let me know and I’ll remove it…. in the meantime, let’s get crack-a-lackin! 😀
What do the asterisks mean?
As always, the asterisk system used in the FA treatment guide applies here too. 🙂 That means the following if there is a little star next to a product:
- One asterisk (*) = contains fatty alcohols. These may or may not feed malassezia.
- Two asterisks (**) = contains esters or polysorbates. These DO feed malassezia.
- Three asterisks (***) = contains both esters and fatty alcohols.
- Four asterisks (****) = contains a concoction of unsafe ingredients.
For more information about what ingredients promote or inhibit the growth of malassezia, please see the original blog post.
Best Products for Fungal Acne (The Results)
In case you missed it, this community has managed to compile a list of over 1,400 skincare products that are safe for malassezia! That means there is A TON of variation when it comes to what products people use to treat this bad boy.
But…. for your convenience, I’ve combed through the list below to find the most commonly used items. You’re welcome. 😎 They are:
.
.
**drum roll please**
.
.
- Cleanser = Vanicream (used by 12 people)
- Toner = Thayer’s Witch Hazel Toner (8 people)
- Serum = The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% (10 people)
- Moisturizer = *CeraVe Cream (14 people). Hada Labo Skin Plumping Gel Cream was a close second, used by 12 people!
- Oil = Squalane (23 people). Many different brands were used, just make sure it’s sugarcane variety to be extra safe. You can read more about why here.
- Sunscreen = ****Biore UV Perfect Face Milk SPF 50+ PA++++ (9 people). This has unfortunately been reformulated and is no longer safe. Bummer! The second place finisher was Skin Aqua UV Super Moisture Milk SPF 50+ PA++++ with 5 people.
- Treatment = **Nizoral Shampoo (25 people)
Despite the fact that A LOT of people used Nizoral (i.e. ketoconazole) to initially treat their malassezia, I don’t recommend using this for longterm maintenance therapy since there’s a risk of microbial resistance.
Most people eventually stopped using it anyway (or heavily reduced its frequency), in favor of other keratolytic agents like salicylic acid, azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or sulfur.
In my opinion, that’s the way to go! In other words, use Nizoral as a mask initially. Once your fungal acne has cleared up, transition to a safer treatment option.
The Case Studies

You saved my skin from fungal acne+Korean skin care chaos years ago and I have not gone back🙌 I did use the Nizoral shampoo a couple times but really I think the most effective thing was reading the last one of these articles and then I just eliminated all the stuff I was using and now there are only 3 products I’ve used daily for years- vanicream cleanser, hado labo premium lotion, and cerave cream. Seriously. I’ve also occasionally used squalane, Hyaluronic acid from the ordinary, or Vaseline at night for extra moisture in winter months. But mainly those three standbys and I have been clear ever since😱. Simple really is better and has also saved me sooo much money. This site is the best, I am forever grateful to you for your research and sharing.
Being included here in the list made me cry! If it weren’t for your blog I wouldn’t have treated those pesky little bumps on my face! I’ve been unaware that I had fungal acne for months until I stumbled upon your blog post and it was recommended by redditors as well so I tried it out and within a week or two my face got smoother and it cleared up so I literally couldn’t have done it without you f.c.!
I’m number 41(😉) I’ve switched to using sulfur soap for wash, Celeteque Hydration Moisturizer (cheapest FA safe locally available here in the PH) and I still use the clotrimazole cream but I’m gonna stop soon because it says I should still use it for 2 weeks after it has cleared up to avoid re-occurence. I still use Head and Shoulders mask 3x a week for maintainance☺️
Thank you so much!!
Looking forward to your skincare routine! 😁
I wanted to add in my 2 cents in the hope that it’s helpful! It’s been a FASCINATING (albeit rough) journey. I have fought this ugly fungal acne on my forehead (that recently moved down to either side of my nose, as well) for 2 years and I’ve scoured your site for help during that time. (Thank you!!) What I tried: Ketoconazole from a Dermatologist. It worked WONDERS – but it only kept it at bay. As soon as I tried to go without it for a couple days, the fungal acne would appear again. During this time I also used Vanicream Facial Cleanser + Elta MD UV Clear Facial Sunscreen SPF 46 and those have been lifesavers and I still use them religiously. Then to my surprise – GUESS WHAT FINALLY WORKED??? FOOD. Guys, for me, this was the missing link. I went on the Autoimmune Protocol Diet and my fungal acne all but went away in 3 DAYS. Is the diet hard as hell? Yes. Is it restrictive? Yes. Is it forever? No! 🙂 It worked immediately. The gut is an integral component to who we are and how well our organs are functioning. And our skin is the largest organ! There is SO MUCH RESEARCH out there on how deeply we are affected by the state of our gut. Our immune system, our emotions, our allergies, our inflammation (including acne!) The AIP diet is meant to be used for only 1-3 months to reset the inflammation in our bodies (aka our gut and it’s effects) and you slowly reintroduce foods to find out your triggers of inflammation. I would encourage anyone to look into it and doing it with the supervision of a Functional Medicine Doctor is the best way -they can even administer a Gut Sensitivity test! The only products I use now are washing my face with the aforementioned Vanicream Facial Cleanser am and pm and applying the Elta MD sunscreen day and night (as my moisturizer – I lay it on thick to really get the moisture). I’m excited and hopeful and will be trying new moisturizers soon. Good luck!!
I just want to express thanks from the bottom of my heart for all of the information you have provided over the years. You have changed my skin for the better! I cannot tell you how often I refer to your posts! My skin has NEVER looked or felt better! I was diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis after having my third child. I believe I suffered from this as far back as my teens, because Retin-A and Vaseline were the only things that kept my skin clear. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU ☺️!!!
I have a history of dehydrated skin and am now treating FA. Most cleansers are too harsh, including Vanicream, and immediately give me tight, red skin, and sore upper cheeks. Then the breakouts come. How can I ensure I am getting enough moisture and what can I cleanse my skin with while treating FA?
Wow…. I feel like I always say this, but thank you! This is AMAZING. I can’t imagine how long this took to put together.
Can Somebody or the Author please tell me, if you can simply starve the yeast but applying NO products? would that be possible?
Wow! This is the sexiest article ever! You’re amazing f.c. 😻😻😻 I would totally date you!
I think Neutralyze Renewal Complex was unknown till now and people will have better feedbacks about it.
Heh. I think I might know what your announcement is. Anything to do with your DIY thangs? *insert Spongebob face from Just One Bite episode* sorry, I’m GIF illiterate.
Anyways, thanks for the post! Looking forward to the next one! 🙂
Love the post! Great for giving me ideas. I over the years I have “over done it” with products, even when switching to fungal acne safe products. I think my skin barrier has been compromised and I never gave it a chance to recover. I’m not sure how to balance letting my skin heal and also clearing my persistent forehead acne. I’m afraid to introduce harsh actives. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated 🙂
Hi was wondering if these products would work for FA on body? And would love to see of anyone cleared up FA and acne scars on body as it seems to be more pesky on the body. Thank you!
Excited to see you back! Hope everythings going well
Thank you for this!
Hi I sent you an email with a request, can you please answer me back? Thank you.
Great post! Thanks for collecting and organizing all this information. My routine (Maleassezia: dandruff, rosacea [red patches and P&P], Blepharitis) that’s helped me the most following much experimentation:
AM and PM:
Hypochlorous acid spray: OcuSoft for eyelids & lashline
Vanicream Facial Cleanser
Bioderma Hydrabio Hydrating Micellar Cleansing Water (great at getting stubborn crud off eyelashes)
Kala Health MSMPure Gel (face & any itchy areas)
The Ordinary Alpha Lipoic Acid 5% (huge difference after a few weeks)
If skin is dry, Hada Labo Skin Plumping Gel Cream
Shower:
Hypochlorous acid spray CleanSmart brand everywhere (scalp, ears, all over body, and ugh ugh ugh genitals, feet)
Happy Cappy shampoo 2x week, otherwise Hair Food Fig shampoo or Suave Ocean Breeze
Vanicream Free & Clear Conditioner
Vanicream Body Cleanser (if skin is itchy, add Happy Cappy)
How do I cure fungal acne? I am very worried, and am just 13 years old.
Skin Type: Atopic/Ezcema-prone, Dry/Dehydrated
Initially cleared skin by introducing Butenafine HCL cream every other night for 3 weeks. Found San Marcos sulfur ointment to be too drying. I already use Rx Ketoconazole 2% shampoo twice a week for seborrheic dermatitis, so I let the excess run down my face as a face wash those mornings – I did this for the 3 weeks I was actively treating the overgrowth.
Current routine:
AM:
Cleanse with Aveeno Baby Cleansing Therapy Moisturizing Wash (pH 4.4!!)
Hada Labo Gokujyun Hyaluronic Lotion (white bottle)
The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% (pH 5.5-6.5)
The Ordinary Ascorbyl Glucoside 12% (pH 6.0-7.0) + The Ordinary Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3% (Monday through Saturday)
Seven Minerals Organic Aloe Vera Gel (pH 5.0)
Cosrx Advanced Snail Mucin 96 Power Essence (pH 6.5)
Moisturel Therapeutic Lotion + The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane
Hada Labo Koi Gokujyun UV White Gel SPF 50+ PA++++
PM:
Cleanse with La Roche Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser (pH 5.5) + konjac sponge
Hada Labo Gokujyun Hyaluronic Premium Lotion (gold bottle)
The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% (pH 5.5-6.5)
Rx Tretinoin Micronized Gel 0.04% (3x a week) or Rx Azelaic Acid Gel 15% (3x a week)
Seven Minerals Organic Aloe Vera Gel (pH 5.0)
Cosrx Advanced Snail Mucin 96 Power Essence (pH 6.5)
Cerave Baby Moisturizing Cream + The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane
Eucerin Original Healing Cream (around eyes)
Cerave Healing Ointment (as occlusive)
Note: I haven’t had any issues with esters in these products. Also, I don’t double cleanse as I do not wear makeup and double cleansing tends to dry and irritate my skin. Also, it took me nearly 2 months to get to where I could use actives as often as I do. I started with Vitamin C only 2 days a week for 2 weeks, then 3, then 6. With Tretinoin, I started with 1 day a week, then 2, then 3. Same with the Azelaic Acid, which I alternate with the tretinoin. Sundays are my “rest” days where I use no actives 🙂
Hi! First I want to thank you GREATLY for putting effort and time for this blog. It’s amazing.
I have a question, how should the healing process from FA be? Does it come to a head? Or just disappear? Should it be come and go within a few days?
My derm gave me ketaconazone shampoo 2% (1-2 times/week) and I washed my forehead with it. It’s only been 1 week, the redness subsided, but the bumps kinda gone one day, come back the next day. She didn’t do any test, she actually gave it for my scalp and eyebrows, but I suspected my forehead was FA too. If you can tell me if I following the right direction, I would really appreciate!
